Totally Busted: Santa Cruz

I was recently approached by the lovely Amanda Burt about Toronto’s conceptual art-party Santa Cruz making its way to Montreal. Piqued mostly by the idea that I could spend an evening with the lovely Miss. Burt, I of course agreed. I suggested, however, that I felt “too old for such art-house shennanigans,” but also was [...]

Facebook Killed My Blog…

…not that it’s completely dead or anything. But the amount of laptop time I permit myself per day is limited, and with the addition of Facebook to my online routine, there’s just less time for blogging. I mean, this blog should be enough of a window into my life: does it really need to be [...]

Entering Nerdshire

A series of recent events caused me to realise that they should create a variation of the term “grupster” that incorporates the word “nerd”. While “negrupster” connotes a black grupster, and “grupsterd” sounds like it belongs in a toilet, I contemplated “grerdrupster” before giving up on trying to pigeonhole my already complex identity any further. [...]

Don’t Steal This

In response to my blog post Playing the Record for People, CBC Radio 3 got in touch with me to talk about our approach to music listening. You can listen to the interview here, and comment, if you like, about the sad state of today’s deluded music industry.
Also, in the media, Mange ta ville [...]

Facebook, I Loathe Thee

I just couldn’t stand it anymore: I needed to see it from the inside. The average Facebook user seems to be reluctantly addicted. It is something like: “Yes, I’m on Facebook. I check it thirty times a day and I hate it but I keep coming back.”
In an emergency situation, they say the first [...]

Wine and Music Pairings

On another tack, I read this bit of news today: Music ‘can enhance wine taste.’ Apparently now music, too, can be paired with certain wines. Such as Hendrix with Cabernet Sauvignon, Tina Turner with a Chardonnay and Otis Redding with Merlot. Who’d a thunk it?
I wonder what The Dears would be paired with? I guess [...]

“You’re Wrong, You’re Wrong, You’re Wrong and YOU…You’re Way Off Base.”

Today I feel defeated by everything, that my world is too hopeless to blog about. Is it? Probably a little bit: the weather like my mood, overcast and blurry. But there should be something to write about, shouldn’t there? Shouldn’t I be excited about the future? Well, to be honest I am excited about it: [...]

Blog Experiment

I started an experiment today. I call it a “message board in blog form,” and I have no idea if it will work. I swapped out our old forum (which gets a handful of relevant posts as well and some undesirable spammy ones) with, well, basically a blog. We’ve been noticing that: (a) users had [...]

Lonely Planet: Montreal

Bored? Thinking of visiting Canada? Don’t leave before purchasing your copy of Lonely Planet’s Canada guide (10th edition printed April 2008). I know not everyone likes to travel by tour book, but at least pop in to your local bookseller (if you still have one) to peek at the mildly entertaining interview with myself as [...]

Playing the Record for People

On Tuesday, Murray and I embarked on an Ontarian adventure. We drove down to play the record for some people. This album is precious to us, and we would be totally devastated if our past year’s work was misused or stolen from us. So we never sent out any CDs to anyone, and in fact [...]
